National Standards for Grades 5-9

Fish Factory examines the relationship between structure and function as students study the adaptability of fish to a variety of ecosystems. Activities introduce classification, anatomy, habitats, and behavior as students build a model of a new fish species and assign it a genus and species. Students are guided to coordinate the habitat, survival techniques, behavior, and feeding patterns with their new fish species' characteristics. At the end of their project, students give a short presentation to defend their fish design. Allow three hours of lab time plus additional time for research. Pairs well with online Build A Fish activities and climate change discussions. Allow three hours of lab time and additional time for research. Designed for 24 students working in pairs.
