National Standards for Grade Levels 10-14
Teach the unique properties of carbohydrates as students run analytical tests for characterizing simple sugars to complex carbohydrates. Six experiments include The Anthrone Test for Carbohydrates, Iodine Test for Starch, Benedict’s Test for Reducing Carbohydrates, Barfoed Test for Reducing Monosaccharides, Seliwanoff’s Test for Ketoses, and Bial’s Test for Pentoses. Required, but
not included: Hot plate or burner, concentrated and 3M hydrochloric acid, concentrated sulfuric acid, glassware. Designed for 24 students working in groups of four. Allow 1-1/2 hr lab time.
