National Standards for Grade Levels 9-12
Provide an introduction to the electrostatic attractions within ionic compounds. Students experience a large number of reactions, allowing maximal observation with a limited amount of time and effort. Includes precipitate forming, gas forming, and nonionized product forming reactions. The investigation is easily extended to teach students additional basic chemical principles including writing ionic formulas of formed products; writing ionic interaction equations; relating placement of elements in the periodic table to their reactivity; and developing solubility principles from empirical evidence. Ideal for high school chemistry or physical sciences courses. Follow-up activities are suggested at the end of the instruction manual. Designed for 24 students working in groups of four. Allow 45-60 minutes lab time. Contains cadmium nitrate and lead nitrate.
