National Standards for Grade Levels 8-12


Students perform four analytical experiments as they learn to characterize fabrics and fibers. First students determine whether each sample is animal, vegetable, mineral, or synthetic in origin by subjecting fibers to a burn test and evaluating fibers for protein and the presence of sulfur. Then, students observe fiber samples to identify general microscopic characteristics and subject fibers to chemical solubility tests. Finally, fibers are examined in stress and strain tests. After learning techniques for proper collection of fiber evidence, student test three unknowns to determine their identity. A complete instructional manual and reproducible student worksheets are included. Required, not included: microscopes, alcohol or Bunsen burners, matches, test tubes, single hole stopper, test tube clamp, and distilled water. Allow 4 hours of lab time. Designed for 24 students working in groups of four.
