National Standards for Grade Levels 7-10
Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures I focuses on solubility based separation methods: evaporation, distillation, filtration, and crystallization. In experiment one a mixture of an element and a compound are separated by differences in solubility and filtration. In experiment two, a mixture of two compounds is separated using differences in solubility and filtration. In experiment three, a mixture is separated using chromatography. In experiment four a mixture is separated using evaporation. Includes all required chemicals, reproducible laboratory procedures, vocabulary, and worksheets. Required, but not included: balance and laboratory supplies. Allow two one-hour lab periods. Experiments 1, 2, and 4 require lab time on a subsequent day. Designed for 24 students working in groups of four.
