Introduce students to six standard fingerprinting techniques used for dusting, lifting, and developing prints from smooth, nonporous surfaces. Includes dusting and lifting prints using carbon and aluminum powders, the Ninhydrin method for detecting amino acids, the Lugol’s Iodine method for detecting lipids, cyanoacrylate fuming, the sticky-side powder technique, and training methods for identifying latent and direct prints. Each investigative group prepares a set of “fingerprint evidence” for another group to analyze using each technique. Using the fingerprint standards developed by the FBI and Modus Operandi sheets, each group identifies the fingerprints of the suspects. Includes a step-by-step instructional manual, student worksheets, and materials for experimentation. Allow 3 hours total lab time, plus 2-3 hrs for developing cyanoacrylate prints. Additional items required but not included: fume hood, (6) one-quart jars or one-liter beakers. Designed for 24 students working in groups of four.
