National Standards for Grade Levels 11-14
Advanced Enzymology includes five separate experiments to investigate the effects of substrate concentration, competitive and non-competitive inhibitors, pH, and temperature on hydrolysis of sucrose to glucose and fructose. The amount of these
reducing sugars can be measured with the chemical dinitrosalicylic acid which creates a distinctive color change. Students use a spectrophotometer to determine the reaction rate. Kit includes all necessary chemicals and a prepaid reply card for shipping the invertase enzyme and glucose solutions separately upon request. Reply card items are only shipped within the continental United States. Required, but not included: beakers, test tubes, and graduated cylinders; a hot plate, and a spectrophotometer. Designed for advanced biology or biochemistry classes. Allow 4-1/2 hours lab time. May be split into to five one hour laboratory periods. Includes sufficient chemicals for 24 students working in groups of four.
